On the 2 - 6 of September we enjoyed a unique international art event in Radio Kootwijk. In the former transmitter building namely, "Building A" which has also been nicknamed "The Cathedral”. It was because of the Cathedral’s impressive appearance, that a handful of Artists from all around the world have gathered together to exhibit their work inside this gigantic National Monument.
During this 5-day expo, we offered a variety of international art work, including an active experience with the Goiania Artists: Odon Nogueira - whom gave a hands-on demonstration in making his totem clay sculptures. Also the South African Artist Sheena Ridley, whom arrived 2 weeks prior, especially to prepare work for the europARTexpo. This was truly a very unique opportunity, to purchase the works of talented Artists, from around the world.
For our visitors we arranged public transport. A bus is available for a mere € 1, from Apeldoorn. The bus left every hour from Apeldoorn Central Station to Radio Kootwijk and in Radio Kootwijk guests could rent a bicycle and enjoy the surrounding Forest Reserve bike route and hiking trails.
The entrance fee included a copy of our catalog and coffee or tea at the brasserie.
History Sketch
The complex KootwijkRadio arose between 1918 and 1923, when the Netherlands was in need of an independent radio to keep contact with their colonies, in the Dutch East Indies. This massive transmitter building has been nick-named “The Cathedral" and was designed by the architect, Luthmann.
It is within these walls that Queen Wilhelmina presented her message to the world: "Hello Bandoeng.
Due to the advancements of communication technology and satellite communications, the role of the village, Radio Kootwijk and “The Cathedral” gave way. In December 2003, the complex was sold by KPN, for Rural Development.
The Forest Reserve: Hoge Veluwe.
Today, Radio Kootwijk is a unique village, consisting of 43 houses and 110 residents. Almost all these houses are registered as National Monuments.
Radio Kootwijk is located in approximately 1 800 hectare of continuous landscape, complete with vast landscapes of Heather, forest and sand dunes.
Radio Kootwijk also neighbors other pearls in the immediate Nature Reserves. To name a few: Kootwijkerzand, the Hoogbuurlose Heather, Gerritsfles and the famous Kröller-Müller Art Museum.
The Nature Reserve “Hoge Veluwe” offers a habitat of red deer, wild boar as well as an abundance of bird life. Some of which are indigenous to the Netherlands, while other birds are just passing through.
Radio Kootwijkhas been declared: An area of silence and well-being and is certainly worth a visit during your attendance at the 2009 europARTexpo. In and around “The Cathedral” you will find a network of bike and hiking trails through the Nature Reserve. Bicycles are available for rent on arrival, just outside the village of Radio Kootwijk.
We look forward to seeing you there.
Yours Sincerely
The europARTexpo team
